…and throughout the year.

We’re in the midst of the holiday season, which can be a lot of fun but can also be In expectation of miraclestressful. Add on that 2016 has been a rough year for a lot of folks, and you may find yourself carrying a heap of stress

No matter which spiritual path you follow, it’s not surprising if you feel overwhelmed, cranky or downright “bah -humbug” at points. Even when we’re working hard at making merry, we all can use a break or two during the holiday season

Let me make you a holiday gift of one…

(It’s a gift that keeps giving…)

The next time you’re feeling anxious, angry, overwhelmed or down, instead of suffering, try this:

Take a deep breath, and

Look up at the ceiling.

(Repeat as needed…)

Give it a try now. Think of something that brings you down (income taxes, your least-favorite co-worker, cleaning out the fridge…) Notice how it makes you feel, where it hits you in the body and in the spirit…

Then breath deep and look up. Feel the difference?

While no substitute for Prozac, most folks find that, when they do this, they feel more positive, centered and able to cope with whatever’s going on in their lives.

Why does this work?

When  stressed, we breath short and shallow. Breathing deeply and slowly triggers a mind-body connection saying “all is well”, and actually puts us in a better place, health and emotion-wise. Looking up seems to strengthen this reaction (and when I’m facing challenges, I find looking up valuable for spiritual reasons as well…)

I like to think that we’re all hardwired with ways to change our beliefs, heal ourselves, find our centers and create our own best lives.

And, by the by, this technique is not just for the holidays, but works all year long. …

In any case, remember next time you’re feeling overwhelmed or down, breath deep and look up… and have a better day (or holiday.)

54f6a620-f2d8-4bdc-ad37-a97aa1a18800It’s the holiday season, and colds and flus are the number one gifts given at this time of year, both during the holidays and immediately following them. Part of this is that more people are pent up inside with each other. Part of this is because we’re all racing around overextending ourselves to try to make things as merry as we possibly can. We wear ourselves out and wear our immune systems down, leaving ourselves open to those colds and flus- and then we share it with the folks we love.

Want to pass on giving a cold or flu (the gift that keeps on giving)?

well there’s some pretty simple things you can do that will help with that…

  • get enough sleep
  • wash your hands frequently
  • eat a balanced diet
  • drink liquids, especially water, liquids with vitamin C or hot liquids, depending on what feels right
  • listen to your body. if it feels tired, get more rest. If it feels stiff, stretch or get a massage
  • build wiggle room into your schedule so that you have time for serendipity but also so you have time to take care of yourself
  • split up the responsibilities- you don’t have to do it all
  • put moisture in the air, so your head doesn’t get stopped up
  • cover your nose and mouth if you cough and sneeze
  • if you start having signs or symptoms that you’re getting sick, don’t try to tough it out. slow down, rest more, drink liquids. It’ll all be there when you’re feeling better

Most of all, pay attention to your own wellbeing so you’ll have the strength, time and energy to enjoy the wonders of the season and cherish others, rather than just soldier through an endless list of tasks

There’s lots of approaches to alternative health, but it starts with the simple things that bring us into alignment  with our own centers, our own health, and our own wellbeing.  So let good enough be good enough, listen to your body and have happy holidays
