I’m typing here in the wee small hours of my 57th birthday and I’m thinking a lot about goals right now

About goals that I’ve had and ones that I will have

About goals achieved and ones that I’m still working on

About goals that it’s time to let go of and ones that I need to keep on trucking on

And a birthday is a fine time to take stock. To look at what you’ve done, and what you want to do. To set some goals and put other ones aside to make room for them

It’s been another challenging year, but still I’m moving on the path to my dreams. And today, in and amongst all of the festivities, I’m making time to figure out where I am now, and where I’m going next, and what I need to do to get there.

When you sail a boat, 90% of the time the boat will not be heading directly for your destination. You need to tack from side to side, in order to catch the wind in your sails to propel you forwards. You get where you’re going by tacking, but also keeping your eye on your destination and bringing yourself back on course

Life’s kinda like that too. A lot of tacking and then getting back on course

A lot of people kind of drift through life and then wonder “what happened?” I’m finding that the key to accomplishing things I’m glad to have done is to know what I want, set some goals to make that happen, and check in to make sure that I’m still on course

So that’s what I’ll be doing today. Setting my new destination, and bringing myself back on course.

Happy birthday to me and happy my birthday to you as well

Are you on course?

They say that happiness and a positive attitude have many benefits for us in body , mind and spirit. It  boosts the immune system, drops our blood pressure, makes us mentally more flexible and resilient, builds creativity and alertness and decreases the chances of illness or injury.

At that point, the question is are you in touch with what truly brings you joy?

And do you celebrate it?…

Let’s all do the dance of joy!

Sometimes you go with the flow and everything come together in just the way it should.

And sometimes it doesn’t.

Sometimes things come along that throw you off balance and that interfere with doing the things that you’re here to do in life- the things that are most important to you.

And that’s where the concept of balance comes into your life…

Many folks think about balance in life as being like a pie chart. So much of your time for work, so much for family, so much for recreation and so forth; but life balance isn’t really like that. It’s more like standing on a teeter totter

When I was a child, for fun, we used to stand on the middle of the teeter totter. Your feet would go up and down and up and down and they were very rarely perfectly even. The concept of balance was a dynamic one, where you went with what was happening at the moment. Balancing things meant that you stayed in motion and everything got what it needed at any particular moment.

Life balance is like that. You can’t be counting the moments and making sure that everything gets an pre-designated amount of time. It’s more dynamic- rolling with what’s happening and seeing that you keep your eye on whats important so that it balances out over time

Last week, I was involved in a car accident. A woman wasn’t paying attention and rear ended me while I was waiting for a stop light to turn; and all of a sudden, my life was full to overflowing with all of the things you have to deal with when you’re in an accident, injured and your car is totalled. This on top of all of the other things that normally fill my time.

It threw me off balance and meant that I couldn’t do all of the things I’d wanted to (including writing this blog) but I knew that balance meant that I needed to deal with the immediate now and bring the other things back into balance with time.

And here I am, back again.

Do you have balance in your life…?

Well, as of March 20th, we’ve officially entered spring, and as of April 1st, we’re a quarterof the way through the year 2013.

And both of these landmarks are the perfect times for new beginnings.

We tend to make resolutions at New Years- plans or goals for our lives for the year to come. Sometimes we achieve them, and sometimes we don’t. Either way, now is a good time to take stock.

  • What have we accomplished?
  • What have we not completed yet?
  • And what would we like to do with the remaining three quarters of 2013?

You have a lot of time left to learn/grow/achieve/ triumph/practice/perfect and make your life a better place to be living in. The journey of a lifetime begins with a single step, but you won’t get anywhere if you don’t take that step.

So what would you like to do in 2013? And how are you going to start?

Rather late in posting today. Sorry, folks. I try to be reliable

I’m huddled here right now over the keyboard to my computer, writing this post as I print out the final handouts for my classes at Changing Times, Changing Worlds (and remembering how much two sided handouts are when you must do them manually :P…)

This year at the convention, I’ve ended up on three panels, doing a booksigning and running a totally amateur tea leaf reading experience , as well as teaching five classes. That and the fact that I hope to catch other people’s classes and panels, as well as meet some old friends and make some new ones means that I’m going to be a busy little Fairy Godmother.

Five classes- and three of them are brand new for this year’s con. I’m also remembering why its good to be teaching new classes and writing about new things. They say that, if you want to really learn something, teach it. My classes are all on things that I know, but, in setting them up to teach them, I’m seeing things about them I hadn’t seen before and I’m learning new dimensions of them.

Worth considering.

Is there something in your life that you want to get better at?

Then who could you teach it to?…

Early on Thursday morning, I told you about the impossible writing challenge that I had set for myself (Six Impossible Things Before Breakfast).

How I only had until the 17th to complete this challenge.

How I’d worked hard, night and day, to accomplish something that seemed impossible.

How I was proud and happy of what I’d accomplished so far.

How I had done everything that I could, and now all that was left was the waiting.

And I invited you to join me in celebrating accomplishing things that I thought impossible and in waiting to see if it all worked out the way I’d hoped for.

Well, I’m pleased to announce that the proof galley that was my goal arrived in my hand midday on 8/16, and the final copy was released as of yesterday and I invite you to dance the happy writer’s dance with me again.

Since the deadline is past, I’m now free to explain the reason for this urgency. My father is the one who first got me interested in science fiction and fantasy tales when I was young. This book is my first urban fantasy novel andI had been planning for several years to dedicate this book to my father. Well, on Saturday we celebrated his birthday, and it was my honor to be able to present it to him as a birthday present from my husband and myself.

When I set this goal, it seemed impossible. Slightly more than 30 days to turn a story and a partly finished rough draft into a finished book to honor my dad…

But the “impossible” has happened, and this makes me very happy.

If urban fantasy is your thing, look  for “The Lands That Lie Between”, and dance with me if you like.

Hoping that you can accomplish your impossible dream as well.
