…and a new one is born. So what are you going to do with it?

What do you want to accomplish in 2017?

There are a lot of people who look down on New Year’s resolutions but, if you use them Vintage still life. Vintage items on ancient map.correctly, they can help us to change our lives and our world for the better. Studies (and common sense) tell us that if we don’t know where we’re going, we end up nowhere or never move from

At that point, it’s good to have ideas about what we want to do with ourselves, rather than just wait on the sofa and see what happens to us.

There’s a couple of ways to do this

You can target specific goals

  • run a marathon
  • publish a book
  • lose 10 pounds

or you can set priorities for the areas of life you want to work on

  • health
  • love
  • family

and chose activities by how they help with these areas

or combine both. There can be value to that too.

The important thing is to think about what changes or improvements you want to have in your life, so you can start to act to make them happen

So, what do you want to accomplish in 2017?

– so what are you going to do with it?

(No really- what great things do you want to do with this gift of a new year?…)

I hear a lot of people talking about New Year’s resolutions with scorn or dismissal. The prevailing story is that resolutions are meaningless commitments that you make that you never intend to keep and that you will abandon by January 15th, or 30th at the latest.

But those are just stories; and you can always choose to tell yourself another story.

Let me lay some ideas on you that you might want to think about.

  • Resolutions are just a fancy name for goals that you set at the beginning of the year.
  • If you never set any goals, it’s likely that you’ll get little to nothing done.
  • We tend to be happier when we are making thing happen that we want to happen.
  • We’re all setting goals all the time, both big ones (I’m going to travel to Paris) and little ones (I’m going to get up to get to work on time.)
  • Goals only work if you do the work to make them happen.
  • Goals are like promises that you make to yourself. If you make a promise to someone and break it, they stop trusting you. If you set a goal and don’t keep it, you stop trusting yourself (which can screw you up in quite a number of ways.)
  • We all fall down on our goals at some point. Some people use that as a reason to quit, but you can also chose to see failing sometimes as part of the process and get back onto that horse.
  • Finally, you can set a goal or make a resolution at any time of the year, but turning points tend to help people to make a change. New Year’s day. Your birthday. Your anniversary

So, you can have a mediocre year that leaves you feeling blah and wondering where it went- or you can have a year where you make astounding things happen and invite miracles into your life.

The difference is goals.

So what are you going to do with 2016?

…and while you’re getting ready  for a wonderful time tomorrow night, why not take a moment and think about preparing for a wonderful 2015?

People talk about new year’s resolutions and how they get broken almost as soon as they get made, but it doesn’t have to be that way. If you set your mind and your heart on something and are willing to do the work to get it, you’re significantly more likely to get there than you are if you just have some vague ideas about doing something someday.

So why not make someday today, or this year? why not make 2015 the year you finally

  • clear out belongings that you no longer use
  • start a meditation practice
  • make time for activities that feed your spirit
  • create reasons to laugh more
  • nurture yourself as well as others
  • take stock of the people in our life and whether they support you or drain you
  • find a type of exercise you like and do it regularly
  • figure out what your life mission is and how you can make it an active part of your life

Or any of your other dreams that have been waiting for someday to finally get here…

Today and tomorrow, when you’re getting ready to have a fun New Year’s Eve, give some thought to what you want to do to make it a great year as well.

Happy New Year

Currently really enjoying a book called “The International Bank of Bob” the story of one man’s experiences with KIVA, an organization that arranges micro-loans to help people lift themselves out of poverty around the world.

One thing that he said that struck me is that one problem is getting people to see beyond their immediate situation and the challenges it poses. Not so much encouraging people to have a long range plan (KIVA candidates are good a long range plans) but rather to encourage them to dream big enough.

Now that’s an interesting thought

We’re moving towards the end of  the holiday season and soon we will be in the time of new year’s resolutions and of thinking about what we want to do with the shiny new year ahead.

Are we dreaming big enough, though? Resolutions give us a road map for our life’s journey, and goals can give us something to shoot for, but sometimes its important to make sure that our dreams are big enough. Big dreams make us reach further, try harder, and even if we do not always achieve everything we set out to, big dreams can move us further in the direction of our life’s mission.

So please stop a moment and think

  • What do you want to do with your life?
  • What would you like to accomplish in 2014 as part of that?
  • And, are you dreaming big enough?

Good things are coming…

When the old year comes to an end and the new year approaches, there’s a tradition of making new year’s resolutions; of setting goals that we hope to achieve in the new year to come. Sometimes we achieve them and some times we don’t but studies find that setting goals makes us far more likely to achieve them.

If you don’t know where you’re going, you’re probably not going to get any where. So we all know about New Year’s resolutions, and some of us set them and some of us don’t. But have you ever thought about the idea that you don’t have to start your new year on January 1st?

You could declare this your new year, and set a resolution now…

It’s never too late to decide to do something different with your life. Something amazing or meaningful or exciting. Something that you can do if you just set your sights on it and move towards it. We’re slightly more than half way through the calendar year- it’s a fine time to start fresh and move forwards on something you want to do.

So what are your new year’s resolutions?

Well, as of March 20th, we’ve officially entered spring, and as of April 1st, we’re a quarterof the way through the year 2013.

And both of these landmarks are the perfect times for new beginnings.

We tend to make resolutions at New Years- plans or goals for our lives for the year to come. Sometimes we achieve them, and sometimes we don’t. Either way, now is a good time to take stock.

  • What have we accomplished?
  • What have we not completed yet?
  • And what would we like to do with the remaining three quarters of 2013?

You have a lot of time left to learn/grow/achieve/ triumph/practice/perfect and make your life a better place to be living in. The journey of a lifetime begins with a single step, but you won’t get anywhere if you don’t take that step.

So what would you like to do in 2013? And how are you going to start?

We’ll be looking at ways to strengthen your resolve to make good things happen, conquer the dragons of Resistance, and otherwise empower your Better World Coming…

When climbing the ladder of sucess,

it’s important to be sure that your ladder is leaning against the right wall….

We’re here at the beginning of a brand new beautiful year.

Many of us have big plans for this year. Many of us have set great resolutions.

  • Get in shape;
  • Lose weight;
  • Find love;
  • A better job;
  • Make more money;

And many of our resolutions will fall away into nothing by mid-January

What’s up with that?

One of the biggest problems with New Year’s resolutions is that many times we’re picking goals that we think we should want, as opposed to what’s really important to us.

And our heart knows what we really want. Our heart isn’t really in those “oughta” goals.

And so, life happens. things come up. And somehow we never do the work we need to make those resolutions a reality.

That’s a path for failure. So lets not go there.

Just like we did last year, I’m going to ask you to do a little exercise to get in touch with what you really want.

Take a moment…

Close your eyes and take a deep breath…

And visualize for a moment who you’d like to be at the end of the year….

………………………………………………………………………………………………

Then open your eyes and write down what popped up.

Do any of your present goals send you in that direction?

Then you may need more or different goals.

Chose the goals that speak to your life mission

And work your dreams….

And have a beautiful, successful 2012

We’ve been talking about New Year’s resolutions and about making changes in ourselves to make our lives better.

(By the by, did you realize that you can start a new year and make a resolution to change your life at any time you like? Mind-blowing, that.)

We’d all like to be healthier/wiser/more prosperous/ more successful/ more whatever our heart calls us to –

But, for the majority of us, change is hard.

Remember your high school physics?

A body in movement tends to remain in movement, and a body at rest tends to remain at rest unless acted on by an irresistible force….

And, since most of us don’t have that irresistible force in our area, while we have good intentions, we tend to fall back into our old patterns (many of us around this time in January…)

Going back to the physics analogy, to get our bodies at rest into motion, we need to find a way to overcome resistance…

Resistance that comes

  • from old habits;
  • from temptation;
  • from inertia:
  • from the expectations of others;
  • from fear of change;
  • from fear of failure;
  • from fear of success;

and from any other really good reasons we have lying around the house.

There are always lots of perfectly good reasons to stay in the life style we’ve currently achieved. Unfortunately, if we want to learn, grow, and have the potential of a better life, we have to kick those perfectly good reasons to the curb and find the way to get past the Dragons of Inertia….

So lets look at that…

The adventure continues ahead…

Many New Years’ resolutions are based on good intentions or trying to live up to what other people tell us we should want to do. We’re more than half way through January, and this is the point in time when many of such resolutions start to unravel.

Why is that?

For most of us, change (such as what we’re trying to accomplish with resolutions) is hard. It’s even harder when the change is something that (deep down) is not as motivating to us as not changing.

So, for many folks, there are two things that motivate us to true, long range change –

Pain….

or

Following your Life Mission.

Want to build resolutions or goals with staying power?

Then you might want to be looking to your Life Mission for ideas….

As you may have heard me say before, I believe that everybody has a Life Mission. Something that he or she brings to the party of Life that no one else can bring.

And you know your Life Mission when you find it, because it’s about what sings in your soul.

This doesn’t mean that goals and changes connected with our Life Mission are always easy.

It does mean that goals based on the expectations of others tend to fall apart. And that goals that move us towards our own personal Life Missions have power and strength and energy and are more likely to come to fruition.

So, knowing that, if you want real change, you need to give ourself a good motivation to make things happen.

And if the choice is between pain and my true calling, I know which I’ll chose…
