Awhiles back, I was talking about our beliefs. How our beliefs tend to shape the nature of reality around us, for good or ill. How that’s why it’s a good reason to cultivate a more positive mindset, because it tends to manifest a more positive world.

All well and good.

Have you ever noticed though, when you start on any program of improving your own life, how things will go on along well for a while, and then suddenly, usually without warning, obstacles, barriers and challenges to your program start to crop up?

Unexpected commitments. People in need. Illness. Exhaustion.

And you feel like giving up. Maybe just for a while, until you can settle these things that are complicating your life.

This is the moment of Truth…

Sometimes, you will have to stop what you’re doing to straighten things out; but many times, these obstacles and barriers and challenges are only sent to strengthen your resolve, to test your commitment to your dreams and to your new path…

Sometimes, as I said, you may have to stop temporarily. Many times, though, the right thing is to use this time to build energetic muscle – to keep going, even though the going’s hard and even if you need to go at a slower pace

And it’s worth finding the barbarian in you at these times

We started out talking about how our energy fields can affect what we manifest in our lives, and how our beliefs can help to determine the kind of energy that we carry around with us.

We started talking about where those beliefs come from. So far, we’ve talked about self talk and what we are taught by the people around us. What other people say to us, and what we say to ourselves.

Now, let’s take this a step further. Lets look at the kind of thoughts that we choose  to think.

Yes, choose….

Studies have found that stress is not caused by what happens to us. That’s why two people can have the same experience and one will do fine, while the other one is devastated.

And the same thing is true about our beliefs. We can choose what interpretation we put on whatever is going on around us; and most people tend to develop patterns of belief, whether empowering, immobilizing or somewhere in between.

If we believe we are victims, we will see experiences as victimizing us. If we believe anything is possible, we can accomplish amazing things. If we believe that we need other people to do for us, we won’t be able to do for ourselves.

And these patterns of belief not only have an effect on the things we can do, but also our energetic fields, and what they manifest in the world.

Fortunately, once we are aware of any patterns of thought we have that don’t serve us, we can keep an eye out for them, just as we keep an eye on our self talk.

We can catch a negative thought, and change it for a more positive one.

(Examples

  • As opposed to ” I’m unlucky in love”, think “He wasn’t right for me, but that doesn’t mean noone is.”
  • As opposed to “I never win” try “I haven’t won yet” instead. Throw in “…so I’m overdue” for bonus style points.)

And, as you substitute positive thoughts for negative ones, you build a pattern of positive thinking, and this creates energy that attracts better things into your life.

So choose the happy thought, and have a happier life!

We’ve talked about how self talk ,whether helpful or destructive,can build your beliefs. Now let’s talk about how the talk of the people around us can build our internal programming.

There are lots of different people in the world, and lots of different beliefs to go with them.

And they’re all ready to share them with you.

Some will want to teach you achievement, and some caution or fear. Some are insightful, some ignorant. Some will energize you, some drain you.  Some will teach you things that are excellent for them but don’t work at all for you.
Some will teach you things that help you be your best, and some will teach you things that limit you.

And most of them will share whatever it is that they believe under the impression that they are being helpful. Whether they actually are or not.

And all of those beliefs (even the ones that contradict each other) will go right into your subconscious if  you let them.

It’s important to examine the belief patterns that are offered to you. To choose the ones that work for who you are, and let the rest of them go. And to spend more time with the folks who energize you and support you in being more perfectly, joyously you, as opposed to the ones who want to make you over into someone else or crush your dreams ( even with the best of intentions).

Know who you are. Know who is part of your tribe. And let them teach you what you need to know about  in life

 Last week, we talked about negative self talk. But what’s a way to start identifying it and then correct it in our lives?

First, it’s good to take some time to sit back and watch for the phrases that you use to knock yourself down and beat yourself up. If you’re having a problem putting a finger on this, ask your friends. The ones who really care about you will already know this and usually be glad to tell you. (Indeed, really good friends may already have been nagging you about these statements for years already.)

 Identify any negative self talk you’ve been using. Once you’re aware of that, it’s useful to know that, just as negative self talk can drag you downwards, positive self talk can start your energy rising again. And you don’t even need to make major changes in that self talk to start out with.

In the same way that you paid attention to what things you told yourself so that you could identify your negative self talk, start watching for those words and phrases as you go through your day. When you spot them, it’s time to turn this talk around.

Consider for a moment a couple of excellent words and phrases.

  • “Yet.”
  • “Up to now.”
  •  “From now on…”
  • “Used to”
  • “From now on, things will be different”.
  • “I choose to change that”

And let’s look at what happens when we add them to our previously negative stories.

  • I haven’t won yet…
  • That kind of garbage used to happen to me, but I chose to change that.
  • I used to be clumsy (or stupid, or irresponsible; or unlovable; or…) but from now, on things will be different.

Even these little changes in self talk can make a big difference in the beliefs that we’re programming ourselves with, and the energy that they generate. When we’re breaking out of the old stories we’ve told ourselves, we can learn to catch ourselves in the middle of the negative stories that we’ve told ourselves forever, and use these words and phrases to modify them on the fly to something that will lift us up as opposed to break us down.

And even a little boost helps us attract better things. That makes the old stories less believable and gives us the awareness and motivation to tell ourselves even better stories that raise our energy and our reality further upwards.

 This can mean some pretty big changes for us- and they all start with just adding a few little words like “yet”, and “used to be” and “from now on”…

One of the ways that we create or strengthen our beliefs about ourselves and the world around us is something called “self talk”. Self talk is the things we say to ourselves about who we think we are and what we think is happening to us. Most of us have stories we tell ourselves about the experiences we have in life. Some of us tell ourselves positive stories that build our energetic level up; but many of us tell ourselves stories that depress us, deprive us of hope and shoot our energetic level straight down into the basement.

  • I’ll never win.
  • That kind of garbage always happens to me.
  • I’m so clumsy (or stupid, or irresponsible; or unlovable; or…)

Any of those sound familiar?

The truth is that psychologically, when we believe the worst, we start to look for evidence that this is what is really happening; and metaphysically, when we believe the worst, the  mind – body connection goes to work to try and make that belief as “true” as possible. One way the mind-body connection does that is affecting the vibration of your energetic field. If you believe in and expect the worst, the mind-body connection starts your energy dropping into the negatives to match those beliefs, which attracts more negative experiences, which makes your mind go “See! Bad things always do happen to me!…

And then the metaphysical merry-go-round spins out of control round and down again…

But wait! All’s not lost. We have a remedy for trashy self talk coming up.

See you then…

Back in the end of January/ beginning of February, I talked a little bit about how our beliefs could shape the nature of reality around us (for your reference, see Building Beliefs  and Building Beliefs- the Tools You Need ) and why it’d be a good idea therefore to cultivate beliefs that create a reality you’d like as opposed to one like chalk  on a black board.

In Building Beliefs – the Tools You Need,  I listed six different techniques I like  for creating such positive beliefs, and clearing out the ones that aren’t so helpful.

  • Watching your self talk;
  • Chosing who you listen to, and how much;
  • Positive thinking;
  • Affirmations;
  • Guided meditations;
  • Hypnosis; and
  • E.F.T. (Emotional Freedom Technique).

In coming posts, I’m planning to take a look at these techniques in more detail, so that those of you who aren’t familiar with them can get  more of an idea of what they entail, so you can decide if my preferred techniques might be helpful to you.

And if you have any questions or comments along the way, I’d invite you to post them. If you’re wondering about something, someone else is probably wondering too.

See you soon

In my 1/17 post (“A Quick Manifestation Interlude”) , I told you a story about an experience with manifestation that Starwolf and I had while camping out at a renaissance faire, and talked about how our personal beliefs can affect our own natural ability to shape reality for good or ill.

But just how do those beliefs get into our internal programming, anyway?

They get into our heads, and our hearts, and our spirits when we hear them over and over and over again. And that’s just as true whether these are things we are taught by family or friends; by society and the media; or by the stories that we tell ourselves (and yes, if you keep telling yourself the same thing over and over and over, you are building a belief into your mind…).

The more often we hear something, whether its positive or negative, the more we program ourselves to believe it-

Unless we choose to teach ourselves something else instead….

And, given that our beliefs tend to shape the nature of reality, I’d think it’s a darn good idea to choose beliefs that create the kind of world we’d like to live in.

More on this is on the way soon…
