I like affirmations. I like subliminals too. I’ve been working with both of them for almost 40 years and I’ve found them a powerful tool for changing myself and my life in ways that I like.

Most of us has dysfunctional beliefs, ones that don’t do us any good. Those beliefs are caused by people (some well meaning and some not) telling us things over and over that limit us or work against our highest good. Things like

  • don’t show off.
  • money is the root of all evil
  • don’t trust people

These end up as part of our unconscious belief patterns because we’ve heard them repeatedly, and our unconscious mind will do everything it can to make those beliefs true. I’ve found that affirmations and subliminals are two of the best ways to clear out beliefs that don’t serve us, and replace them with ones that do

What’s an affirmation? It’s a positive statement that is repeated over and over to install 54f6a620-f2d8-4bdc-ad37-a97aa1a18800new beliefs in the brain. We got the dysfunctional beliefs through repetition and affirmations help us to write over that belief with one that serves us better.

What’s a subliminal? It’s an affirmation that’s sent in a way that we don’t really notice it. It may be visuals that flash on a screen fast enough that we barely notice them, or an auditory track that’s buried under music or sound effect so that you can barely hear it. The fact that it’s hidden decreases  the odds that your own natural resistance to change will kick in, so change because easier because you’re not fighting yourself@

I like both and have be using them for years, but this weekend , I ran across a program called Subliminal 360 that lets me flash affirmations that I’ve chosen or approved at a subliminal rate on my computer screen while I’m sitting here writing. Very customizable and I can also burn custom auditory subliminal MP3s is I like to carry about with me.

I’ve been using this over the weekend and have enjoyed it very much. Even feel like I’m beginning to see small changes in my behavior, so good stuff.

If this is the kind of thing that might interest you, you can check it out at Subliminal360

and no matter what, hoping that the changes you want go well for you

In energy work, our beliefs, both conscious and unconscious, shape our expectations of what we can do and what the world around us will be. More positive beliefs tend to attract a more positive world. And our beliefs are created by the things we’re taught,  both by others and what meaning we put on our experiences.

But what if our beliefs are negative? How do we change them, if they’re hidden away in our unconscious minds?

54f6a620-f2d8-4bdc-ad37-a97aa1a18800One way is affirmations. Just as negative thoughts, repeated over and over, can program us for negative attraction, so repeating positive statements can force negative beliefs out and replace them with beliefs that serve us better

It’s been getting colder hereabouts, and when it gets colder, my knees, which have seen a lot of living, start to ache more and even hurt. Given that my life is lived in motion most parts of the year and especially in the holiday season, painful knees and the associated limp are not what I want to be dealing with, especially when I’ve got people to see, places to go and things to do.

So, anyway, I was limping along on my daily rounds the other day and the pain and the crankiness in my knees got worse and worse until I finally had to stop, sit down and take a break.

And as I was sitting there, waiting for things to get more manageable so I could move on again, I started thinking.

I thought”Hey, I know that affirmations have helped in the past to ease pain for me. Haven’t done that for awhile.”

I thought “Hey, I know  acupressure to relive knee pain and make them stronger. Haven’t done that for awhile.”

I thought “I know Reiki too and that can do wonderful things to help my body heal. Haven’t done that for awhile.”

Well, duh.

I had the tools I needed to support my body and feel better. I knew what I needed to do to take care of myself, and I was so busy that I didn’t do it.

That ever happen to you?

So, I did my affirmations and I did my acupressure and I added in my Reiki, and, when I stood up again, 95% of the pain was gone and I was walking much better.

and there’s the two clues

It’s not enough to know how to do something- if you want to benefit from that knowledge, you have to use it,

and…

in this season of giving to and caring about others, its important to to take care of yourself as well.

So what do you know that you need to do to take care of yourself?

Back in the end of January/ beginning of February, I talked a little bit about how our beliefs could shape the nature of reality around us (for your reference, see Building Beliefs  and Building Beliefs- the Tools You Need ) and why it’d be a good idea therefore to cultivate beliefs that create a reality you’d like as opposed to one like chalk  on a black board.

In Building Beliefs – the Tools You Need,  I listed six different techniques I like  for creating such positive beliefs, and clearing out the ones that aren’t so helpful.

  • Watching your self talk;
  • Chosing who you listen to, and how much;
  • Positive thinking;
  • Affirmations;
  • Guided meditations;
  • Hypnosis; and
  • E.F.T. (Emotional Freedom Technique).

In coming posts, I’m planning to take a look at these techniques in more detail, so that those of you who aren’t familiar with them can get  more of an idea of what they entail, so you can decide if my preferred techniques might be helpful to you.

And if you have any questions or comments along the way, I’d invite you to post them. If you’re wondering about something, someone else is probably wondering too.

See you soon

In my 1/24 post (“Building Beliefs”), I talked about beliefs, conscious and unconscious, and how those beliefs tend to shape the nature of reality around us.

They do this in a psychological way, by causing us to look for evidence that supports that belief, and therefore effects how we view and interact with the world. They also do this in a metaphysical way, by setting our energy fields to a vibration that attracts more of what we believe is so, and other things at the same vibration.

So, if you believe you’re born to win, you don’t necessarily win 100% of the time, but you do tend to win more than the average bear.

And if you believe that you’re a loser….

Ish……

Let’s not go there.

Better to cultivate beliefs that support better things, people and experiences for you; ones that draw better things into your life.

But what about unconscious beliefs? How can you deal with beliefs you can’t even see that you have?

Well, there’s a few good techniques out there.

The six that I like best are

  • Watching your self talk;
  • Chosing who you listen to, and how much;
  • Positive thinking;
  • Affirmations;
  • Guided meditations;
  • Hypnosis; and
  • E.F.T. (Emotional Freedom Technique).

Any of these techniques can be used to clear out beliefs that sabotague you or do not serve you, and replace them with beliefs that serve you better. We’ll be looking at them in more detail in posts to come.

So, what beliefs would you like to change?…

In my last post on meeting your blocks to manifestation, we talked about how problems with your self esteem can rise up and create blocks to manifesting what you want. How that Rotten Little Voice inside can tell you that you’re unworthy, that success is scary, that achieving your dream will just make you unhappy, that your success will hurt other people , and other lies that keep you trapped and unable to live your dreams.

We’ve talked about the Rotten Little Voice in other previous posts, but it also can pop up as an obstacle to maifesting your dreams.

So how can you silence that Rotten Little Voice? How can you improve your self -esteem so it will support you in manifesting your dreams?

Different people need different answers. Because of this, I’m offering an all-you-can-eat-buffet of solutions, so you can pick and chose and fill your plate with what serves you best.

Want some ideas? Try to:

  • Use affirmations to reprogram your unconscious beliefs:
  • Use E.F.T. (Emotional Fredom Technique) – a system of tapping on energy meridians combined with affirmations to clear stick negative beliefs:
  • Spend  more time with people who make you feel good about yourself, and less time with the “dream -killers” who put you down:
  • Use subliminal tapes to feed your unconscious positive feedback while you do other thinsg:
  • Use hypnosis or self-hypnosis to  change your habitual thought patterns;
  • Visualize yourself suceeding at your dream -include emotion, the five senses, you in the viualisation:
  • Spend times remembering the times that you have suceeded, big or small;
  • Do things that make you happy – its harder to put yourself down when you’re happy;
  • Feed your spirit positive things – read positive books, listen to positive music, etc. Limit your exposure to things that tell you that living your dreams is hard or will make you unhappy;
  • Do the gratitude dance – be thankful for the good things already in your life and the things that you have already achieved;
  • Look for role models who have succeeded in the area that you want to succeed in. Learn from them. If them, why not you?  (And if there are no role models in your area, why not you as the first?…)

These are just a few of many methods you can use to get your self -esteem up and dancing, and stop blocking yourself.

And make your dreams come true…

See you soon

We’ve  talked about how our beliefs, conscious and unconscious, shape our world and manifest experiences that support those beliefs.

We’ve talked about ways to change those beliefs, such as affirmations, setting an intention, and telling ourselves better stories through positive self talk.

Let’s take a deeper look at self talk.

Some self talk comes from other folks, like our family and friends. Even if they care for us, they may see us in ways that limit us or undermine our best lives.  (For instance “Your brother’s the smart one.”)

Some self talk comes from ourselves –  from lessons we have chosen to learn from our experiences. These lessons may be one way of finding meaning in those experiences, but not be the interpretation that supports us in having our most happy, prosperous lives. There may be better lessons to take away from these experiences than the beliefs we absorbed. (For instance, after the end of a bad romance, do we believe “All men are jerks.” or ” I need to chose a relationship with someone who treats me with respect.” ?)

Either way, we internalize these beliefs and they create our self talk –  the stories that we tell ourselves. As we pass through life, our beliefs create on-going self talk, that runs constantly like the theme music of our lives. The beliefs and self-talk manifest experiences that support those beliefs. The beliefs/self-talk  also shape our attention to focus on things that support those beliefs.

Which strengthen those beliefs.

Which manifest more evidence.

It’s a constant, self-feeding spiral, whether for good or ill …

Fortunately, that can work for us as well as against us.

Our beliefs can shape our self-talk. Our self-talk can also shape our beliefs.

Start listening to the things you tell yourself about yourself and the world around you.

Then think about whether there’s a better  story you could tell yourself.

You don’t have to constantly monitor yourself or make a total change to your self-talk all at once.

Even a small change can make a major difference.

And I’ll be giving you examples in the next post on the Power of Words

See you then

In the last post, we talked about resistance. About your old unhelpful beliefs fighting back to stay a part of you, as opposed to letting you replace them with more helpful beliefs. You’ve lived by your old beliefs for so long that they’ve become habit. It can take time and effort to climb up out of the rut these beliefs have ground into your unconscious and teach yourself a new way of doing things.

Unfortunately, many times people will listen to the resistance and stop trying to change. They see the grain of truth in the resistance. They lose track of the fact that that resistance may tell you a truth, but only about what has happened up to now.

And that you can create a new better truth that shapes your life from now on.

Still, fighting resistance can make this change harder and even cause folks to give up on their dreams.

So how do we overcome that?

If  you repeat your affirmations enough, you will eventually knock that  old belief out, but it’ll take hard work:

Or,

You can revise the type of affirmations you use.

Remember that I told you that an affirmation is most powerful when it’s in the present tense?(” I exercise everyday.”)

But if you’re affirming something that is a major change for you, resistance may appear.

Instead, you can word your affirmation as an intention. (“It is my intention that  I exercise everyday.”)

On the negative side, affirmation/intentions aren’t quite as powerful as direct affirmations for changing your beliefs.

On the plus side, when you incorporate words like “my intention” or “”I intend” in your affirmation, it is less likely to trigger resistance. Resistance opens one eye, doesn’t see an outright conflict and rolls over and goes back to sleep

And, with repetition, the unhelpful belief gets sandbagged without ever triggering resistance.

The regular affirmation is more powerful. The intention affirmation is less, but also less likely to trigger resistance, so you don’t have to work as hard, although possibly a bit longer.

End call- I’d try a regular affirmation first. If I started getting a lot of resistance, I’d swap to an intention affirmation to work with at first, and, once resistance decreased, I’d go back to the regular  affirmation.

Either way, I’d be altering reality to what I wanted.

Now, this may all sound like psychology with nothing extraordinary attached. The interesting thing though, is that it can be useful in creating situations and things that seem miraculous.

  • Like attracting helpful people.
  •  Activating psychic ability.
  • Manifesting things.

And so on

So do you chose a regular affirmation or an intention affirmation?

I’d say it depends on how loud the “rotten little voice”  of your resistance is.
