Well, it’s New Year’s Eve, with a bright and shiny new year on the way. This seems like a good time to talk about New Year’s folklore- ways to invite abundance, health, prosperity, joy, growth and lotsa other good things into your life. Some of these beliefs are things that I’ve had personal experience with. Others are things that I haven’t tried yet, but that seem to have some intrinsic sense to them.

In expectation of miracle

You’ll find my comments with each belief

In no particular order…

1) Both Ireland and Japan believe in having a thoroughly cleaned house on New Year’s Eve.I found one reference from Ireland that said if you left your dirty dishes to the next day, you’d be lumbered with toil and labor for the year. (Energetically, cleaning opens space for new things to come in, as well as being pleasing to fairies…)

2)In Wales, they open the back door on the first stroke of 12 to let the old year out, and the front door on the last stroke to let the new year in (energetically putting the past behind us)

3) In Scotland, Britain, and other UK countries, the “first footer” is the first person to cross the threshold after the year turns. To bring luck in the coming year, it should be a tall, dark man, preferably bringing gifts of 1 or more of the following  – whiskey, coal, small cakes or a coin; and should be given the hospitality of the house (a guest bringing symbolic gifts can energetically draw good fortune)

4) In the southern US, eating black-eyed peas, particularly in a dish called “Hoppin’ John” is believed to bring abundance in the coming year( this started during the Civil War, when food was in short supply, and black-eyed peas could fill you up) .

5) The noise making common throughout many cultures at New Years was intended to drive evil spirits away. (Sound is often used for breaking up and banishing negative energy)

6) In Spain, eating 12 grapes at the stroke of midnight brings good luck for the next 12 months (I could do with 12 juicy months in the coming year)

7) In Poland, touching the floor right foot first when you get out of bed on New Year’s Day brings good luck. (Putting your right foot forward seems to set a good intention).

8 ) In parts of England, the first water drawn from a well on January 1 is supposed to bring fortune and happiness (I like this, but I’m not sure why.)

9) Wearing new clothes on New Year’s Day is considered lucky and an omen of how the year will go by many Haitians and Londoners. (Symbolic magic, drawing more abundance)

10) Finally, I heard about a Sicilian custom of taking a full set of new coins, and placing them face up on the window sill before 12 to bring good luck as we pass from one year to the next. (Once again symbolic magic, intermixing intention, physical symbols and time)

I hope you have fun on New Year’s. I’d also recommend that you use one or more of these beliefs (or make up your own) to build an intention for a happy, loving, healthy, prosperous, wonderful year to come…

Because we all deserve it…

I’m  picking out a new sweater, lining up a first footer and contemplating grapes as you read this 🙂

All good things to you- now and in the year to come.

Deck them halls and hang that holly. We’ve looked at some gift ideas so far from the worlds of alternative health and personal growth. How about some presents from the world of metaphysics?Copy of Fotolia_44996157_M

Before you start, the first step is to find out what area of metaphysics interests your recipient. Metaphysics covers a wide range of interests, from magick to New Age to certain spiritual paths, such as Wicca; and a great gift for one area is not so great for another.

Showing an interest in what path your recipient is on is respectful, and giving a great gift because you’ve done your homework rocks.

Good vibrations – A physical space can gather dust, and it can also retain the vibrations of the things that have happened there – and those aren’t always good vibrations. These vibrations can affect the energy of the space and how folks feel there.

If your loved one feels the energy of his or her space needs help, a gift of things that can clear negative energy or help improve the energy in a space is useful. Sage for smudging. Singing bowls and other instruments for smudging with sound. Crystals such as rose quartz to create a more positive supportive energy field.

The symbol is the thing – In manifestation work, having a concrete symbol of the thing you’re trying to manifest can be helpful to focus on. A model of a wished for car, a picture of that dream house, or a mocked up magazine cover with your friend as the new number one actor in America can be a start in manifesting that dream.

The tools of the trade – Every activity has its own equipment, and metaphysics is no exception. Whether the person you’re shopping for uses herbs, candles, or obscure New Age gadgets, a gift of  the right tools or supplies supports that individual’s path or practices and makes the season bright.

The gift of knowledge – Whether you’re exploring and expanding the boundaries of energy, reality, magick or spirit, the knowledge of those who came before you can make your own journey better and more effective.

Books, recordings and classes in the metaphysical area of your recipient’s interest are always a good choice (and if you’re not sure exactly what to get, a gift card that puts a friend or loved one in a position to choose exactly what they most need next is an excellent gift.)

Hope these posts give you some gift ideas for the magickal person in your life.

Well, the holiday shopping season is now in full swing -but the mall isn’t the only way to make your presents felt 🙂

We’ve looked at some ideas for gift giving from the field of alternativeCopy of Fotolia_44996157_M health. Let’s take a look at gifts from the area of personal growth this time around.

The gift of knowledge-

The journey of  a million miles begins with a single step… and many times, that first step is learning about what you want to accomplish.

If you’ve got someone on your list who’s contemplating doing something they’ve always wanted to, but haven’t had the courage to before, one great way to start is books or classes on their passion ( Be sure your gift is on on what your recipient wants, as opposed to what people think he or she should want…)

The tools of the trade-

When you’re developing a new skill or practice, there are often a lot of things that you need to get started, and more that will make it easier. Pens or a flash drive for a budding author. Paints and brushes for an artist. A snazzy sweat suit for the person looking to get in shape.

A gift of the tools makes it easier to move forwards.

The time to follow a dream-

Many times, people don’t make the changes they need to or follow their dreams because “real life gets in the way” and they don’t think they have the time.

If you’ve got someone whose dreams are on the back burner because of time, is there something you could do for this person so they could make time to write music, learn French or dance the tango? (This could be the most important gift that they ever receieve…)

The gift of support- Finally, many people never pursue their dreams because they seem to be impossible- and your support can be the one thing they need to live those dreams.

Tell him you believe in him. Make a big jar full of folded slips of paper with “You can do it” on every one. Give her  an “I believe in you and your dreams” plaque. Go to www.Zazzle.com  and create a “World Famous Author/Painter/Flamenco Dancer/ (Insert Your Passion Here)” t-shirt or ball cap. Be his or her fan club.

There’s four ways that you can give a gift of personal growth and a better life. And we’ve got more ideas coming your way soon

Mainstream medicine does a great job of helping us return to health when we’re sick or injured. Alternative health does a great job of Copy of Fotolia_44996157_Mhelping us keep from going there in the first place.

But it’s not always fun or easy to live a healthy life style. So, one great gift can be something that makes it easy and fun.

You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink. Likewise, you cannot make someone do things that you think would be healthy for them. Different people have different needs and interests, and what you think is great might be just what that person doesn’t need

But, sometimes people are ready and interested, and all that they need is a little help to get started. And at that point, that little help truly is a gift

Hydration-

55-60% of the human body is made up of water, and both mainstream and alternative medicine agree that one of the most healthy things we can do for ourselves is to drink enough clean water everyday, (Something a lot of us have problems doing.)

Want to give the gift of hydration? A water filter, whether attatched to the tap or on a pitcher or water bottle provides a regular source of water that’s clean and free of many impurities. A fun water bottle makes it easy to keep track of how much water you’ve drunk and to carry water with you (and therefore drink it) throughout the day. (Aluminum has a possible link with alzheimers, and some plastic can leach chemicals into the contents with prolonged use, so the best choice is a stainless steel bottle.)

A healthy meal-

In this crazy, multitasking world, it’s often easier and more convenient to grab some fast food or convenience food when the day is busy. While that’s ok in moderation, it’s not always the most healthy choice.

To give the gift of nutrition, it’s first important to remember that a meal isn’t healthy if the person won’t eat it. Pushing an extreme dietary change on someone who doesn’t like it is not a gift.

That being said, you can offer to cook something healthier that your recipiant does like, or take them out for a healthy, balanced meal, or give them a gift certificate to a food service (such as one offering fruit, or prepackaged healthy meals) where they can make their choice of something healthy.

Environmental sounds –

The modern active lifestyle can create stress, and it can be difficult to calm down and release that stress at the end of the day.

Environmental sounds, whether music, sound effects, or sounds of nature are designed to be played quietly in the background as you go about your day, and to lead your brain waves into more calm, relaxed, less stressed patterns.

Two good sources of these recordings are The Relaxation Company (http://www.soundstrue.com/relaxationco/index.php)     and Brain Sync(http://www.brainsync.com/)  (Free samples at Brain Sync)

The gift of rest-

One of big causes of illness and injury these days is insufficient rest. Folks are so busy trying to be all things to all people that they end up not getting enough sleep and downtime. And stress doesn’t help with this either.

One way you can give the gift of rest is to give the gift of your time. Is there something you could do for that person to free up some of their time so that they can take a nap/ get to bed earlier/ or just relax? There are many things (child care, errands, cooking) where it only takes slightly longer to do them for two people than it does for one, and the time and energy you save the recipiant of your gift can be the best thing you can give them.

So there’s four things from the world of alternative health that you can give to people you care for to make their world a better place. More ideas coming up in the future
