When we talk about a bad or abusive relationship, we tend to think about romantic partners, but there’s more to it than that.

An abusive relationship can be

  • Parent/child
  • other family members
  • Boss
  • Co-workers
  • Classmates

Any relationship where one person uses words or deeds to hurt another one for reasons such as control, feeling powerful or other things can be an abusive relationships

Many years ago, I worked for a very bad boss. I knew that it was unpleasant, indeed awful to work with her, but one day I had an “a-ha” moment. I thought “She is constantly criticizing me, lying to and about me, creating situations where I cannot succeed and then punishing me when I fail. She engages in meaningless activities designed to show me that she has power and I do not (such as giving me a list of things to do that are impossible in the time available and then making me stand and wait while she makes phone calls before I can get started.) She does everything she can to make me feel small, powerless and incompetent.”

The “a-ha” moment for me was that I realized that, if this was a marriage as opposed to a work relationship, there would be no question that this was an abusive relationship.

And I got out soon after.

And that’s when the work begins…

*Note- Being in or ending a bad or abusive relationship can leave you with physical, mental, emotional and spiritual damage which you need to deal with. Since this is not a “one size fits all universe”, everybody will have different things they need to heal and recover.

If you need medical treatment, or counselling, or medication, I’d encourage you to get what you need, just as I’d encourage you to try alternative health approaches or self esteem builders. Remember to find what works for you, and then make sure that you do what you need to heal on an ongoing basis.

Take care of yourself- you deserve it.*
