Hi folks

Getting ready to celebrate the New Year?

Last New Year, I posted a list of customs from around the world for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day that are supposed to bring you prosperity and good fortune in the coming year.

For your convenience, here’s a link to that article.

So eat some grapes or hoppin John, wear your new clothes, clean house or have yourself first footed,

and have yourself a wonderful New Year

Back to Warding.
 After you have cleansed the area you wish to ward, your next step is to cast a circle . As I am Wiccan, I cast a wiccan style circle, but you should create one in accordance with whatever tradition YOU belong to. The main difference is that for a permanent circle you use crystals instead of candles. These function as “repeaters”, keeping the circle up even if a physical object crosses it.

Happy Kwanzaa, to those who celebrate it!

For the rest of us, we’ve passed beyond the excitement and excesses of the holiday season, and have only New Years before we pass into a shiny New Year, full of possibilities.

For me, this week tends to be full of finding homes for presents I have received, clearing up after Christmas crafting, and beginning to catch up on commitments that went on hold during the last down hill dash to Christmas.

As I restore some order to my little corner of the world, however, I also find it a great time to start thinking about the year to come.

What do I want to do in the coming year?

What do I want to learn?

What do I want to accomplish?

Who do I want to be and where do I want to go by this time next year?

After all, we’re about to receive the biggest, best holiday gift of all – the gift of a shiny new year, fraught with possibilities, where we can do amazing things if we so chose…..

It’s exciting….

Studies find that

  • if you want to get someplace, it’s important to know where you’re going;
  • when you write down your goals, you appreciably increase the chance of achieving them;
  • if you have a Life Mission, it helps you to choose goals that are fun, reinforcing, and meaningful to you:
  • if you give some time to thinking about what you want to give your energy/love/time/resources to, you’re far more likely to do something that you’ll feel good about afterwards;

We’ve all got a potentially wonderful year coming up, if we chose to make it astounding. So I’m inviting you, as we pick up the last scraps of wrapping paper and enjoy the final twinkle of holiday lights about the neighborhood, to join me in giving some thought about what kind of a year you want to have.

What do you want to do this year?….

(Let’s dream big!…)

It’s four more days to Christmas Eve, and unless you’ve gotten things all done in advance, your pace is probably accelerating.

It can be easy to succumb to holiday stress at this point, but stress is what can make you be unkind and uncaring to the folks you love and to yourself, and can spoil the joys of the season.

And that’s no fun. So we don’t want to go there.

In my last post(12/19/10), I listed four things that you can do to cut your holiday stress,  keep your center, and be in tune with the joys of the season.

 I also promised you more. And here they are…

5) NUTRITION – During the holidays, there’s a lot of cookies, party food and fruitcake available (amongst other things). While it’s lovely to indulge in holiday goodies, make sure you’re also getting fruit and veggies, balanced meals, and drink enough water, so holiday tummy doesn’t spoil your good times.

6) DO WHAT YOU LOVE Many times we get so busy doing for others that we forget to do the things that feed our spirits. Or worse, we put them aside because it’s all about caring for others…

But the holidays are about you too…

And doing the things that feed your spirit will actually give you what you need to do more things faster for others.

So be sure to take some time to drive around and look at lights, listen to holiday music, eat a candy cane, or whatever floats your boat.

Balance will lift your stress and let you give your love to others.

 7) CRANKY OR COLD MEANS SLOW DOWN – When we’re pulling together a collection of wonders for the holiday, it’s easy to over extend ourselves. We can do that a bit for the short time ( kinda like sprinting), bt if we do too much, our bodies will let us know. We start getting cold or flu symptoms, crave naps, or ache.

If you’re starting to feel creaky, you may need to slow down, lest you dive into a full-fledged flu or “case of the miseries” (either of which will spoil your holiday). Step back and look at your list. What needs to get done? What can be delegated? What can be scaled back (could you use ready-made cookie dough rather than make your own)? What would be nice but can  be done with out.

The folks that love you would rather have you healthy and happy for the holidays than have the perfect dinner…

8 )  ENJOY THE SEASON Finally, don’t get so tied up in “getting things done” that you forget to have fun. The season is supposed to be about Wonder and Spirit and Joy, and if we let the shopping and wrapping take over, we miss what the season has to give us.

So give yourself some time for joy and peace and caring and compassion…

And have a happy holiday

Well, we’re in the holiday season and folks are zipping around, buying presents, trimming trees, lighting menorahs, going to holiday events, eating rich foods, overextending themselves and doing all of the other kinds of burning the holiday candle at both ends that can wear you out.

And everyone and sundry is talking about “holiday stress”….

Wanna know a secret? You don’t have to be stressed or depressed for the holidays. You just need to keep a few  things in mind…

1) LEAVE EXTRA TIME  Do you have an amazing plan for all of the wonderful things you’re going to do to make this holiday special? (I know I do…) Have you built flexibility into your plan?

No matter how well you plan, it’s guaranteed that some things are going to take longer than you thought. Traffic jams, extra errands and the great Mystery of unforseen emergencies will happen.

And when it happens, you can roll with it or go to pieces…

Plan for the unplannable. Leave yourself some wiggle time and you’ll have time to adapt to change and enjoy the season. (It also sets you free to be compassionate if people around you need it.)

2) REST  – Going to parties? Shopping for presents? Wrapping and baking and decorating, oh my?

It’s easy during the holiday season to stay up too late, get up too early and shortchange yourself the sleep you need in the name of “getting it all done”. Make sure you make getting enough rest a priority so you can be happy, healthy and enjoy the season.

 3)  GOOD ENOUGH Have all of the wonderful plans you like. Then set a policy of being kind with yourself, of accepting “good enough” as opposed to holding out for “perfect”

Perfectionism tends to lead to harshness, and crankiness, and has spoiled holidays throughout the ages. Good enough, on the other hand, puts the emphasis on acceptance, which helps folks to be kind with each other and themselves, (and this is what a happy holiday is all about)

4) TAKE A BREAK – With so many important things to accomplish, many folks feel guilty if they aren’t making every minute count. This can make you tired and cranky, and cause you to be unkind to the people you’re trying to be nice to.

The answer – take a break.

 Take a break

  • to listen to holiday music;
  • to make contact with people you care for;
  • to watch a funky holiday special on tv;
  • to drive around and look at the lights;
  • to get your center back;

You’ve left extra time, right? Well, a break is one good use for this time to regain your center, and reconnect with the joy of the season.

The holidays can be stressful or they can be wondrous; and the main difference seems to lie in keeping your center, taking care of yourself as well as others, being present in and enjoying the moment,and doing enough without trying to be perfect.

There’s more suggestions for ways to have a happy and balanced holiday on the way…

A basic list of  equipment for potion brewing.
 Non- reactive pots;  that means stainless steel or teflon lined, 2 & 5 quart.
 Strainer
 Measuring cups  1/4-1 cup, pint and quart; plastic will do
 Measuring spoons
 Funnel
 Ladle
 Non – wooden stirring spoon, Wood may look archaic and “Witchy” but steel or plastic avoids cross contamination
Heat source, such as a hot plate
Storage jars and bottles
Mortar and pestle
Now where can you get these things ?
Big Lots, Ocean State Job Lot, Family Dollar are good sources for inexpensive kitchen ware, Pier One for storage bottles and jars, and if you have access to an IKEA store, then you can find all of it.

We’ve been talking about the phenemenom of obstacles popping up on the path to your dreams.

Sometimes this happens because we’re heading for the right Dream, but we’re taking the wrong route….

As we discussed a ways back, if you want to get some where, first you need to know where you’re going (or you could end up any where…). When climbing the ladder of success, you need to be sure that you’ve leaned your ladder against the right wall.

Once you’ve gotten clear on that, one of the other major stumbling blocks most of us run into is to think that our dreams will come to us in one specific way, and that way only.

Dream – marriage. Wrong route – just like my parents had.

Dream – professional success. Wrong route – through a field that most people think of as sucessful

Dream – serving the Universe. Wrong route – working with people in poverty overseas.

(By the by, when I’m listing these things as “wrong route”, it doesn’t mean that this may be the wrong route for you. It may be your perfect route. These are just common examples of how you can be heading the right direction, but get sidetracked by an expected route off of the way that you are supposed to reach your dream…)

Some times we get so set on reaching our dream by a particular method, that we lose track of the fact that there’s another (or several other) ways to get there that would be easier, quicker, more pleasurable.

It’s like if there’s a big traffic jam on the highway,

You can get on and sit there listening to the radio and going nowhere for a couple of hours…

Or you can take an alternate route and be there in 15 minutes….

Feel like you’re banging your head against the wall in trying to reach your dream?

Then it might be good to stop, step back, and take a good look at whether you’ve gotten so attatched to getting your dream in a particular way that you’ve closed off the avenues to better options…

More coming 🙂

I’m taking break from the Warding series  to do a post or two on the importance of  safety in the art of making potions and related mixtures.
So let me put on my Severus Snape hat and get started.
1: Do not use your cooking utensils for making magickal mixtures. This is both for ritual reasons (separating  the magickal from the mundane) and for safety reasons. (Some of  the materials are poisonous ) .
2: While I am all for “Green” Witchcraft,   if you can obtain new containers for your finished products, you can avoid cross contamination due to residue ingrained into the material of the container. Think pasta sauce in a plastic container.
Next time …… what you need and good places to get them.
