When I was a little girl, we used to count white horses for good luck….
White horses were relatively uncommon. Whenever you saw a white horse, you said “Lucky, lucky white horse – ding! ding! ding!” as you tapped the palm of one hand three times with the thumb of the other, counting that horse.
When you got 100 horses, you were entitled to a wish!
And then you started counting again…
Basic folk magick at its’ best…..
But, what if it’s based on a flawed theory?
The theory that good luck and good fortune are rare, unusual and hard to tap into?….
What if, instead, good luck was plentiful and all around us, like the air ?
What if luck were something that we were naturally always in touch with, like the ground beneath our feet?
What if wishing were as easy and effective as breathing or dreaming or burping?…
Now these are not the beliefs that most of us have about good luck….
But, since we know that the beliefs we hold tend to shape the nature of reality around us, isn’t the belief that good luck is easy to access and happens often worth considering?
And, since we have Free Will, shouldn’t we chose the beliefs that are most likely to help us be healthy, prosperous, wise and happy?
Think about it…
What do you often see that might become a symbol of good luck on the way?….

First, I’ve always been just a little bit lucky, but I’ve always been just a little bit on the conceited side, so part of me always believes I deserve it.
Second, just to share, my mother told me when I was small that if your right palm itches, you’ll be meeting someone new and if your left palm itches, you’re coming into money. I know it’s as silly as picking up pennies for good luck, but I believed it then, and I believe it now … therefore … I always seem to know when I’ll be heading home from work to more work because my left palm always itches before an order comes in.
I think recognizing that your own mind and energy are making the connection is the key, yes? It’s as if, with these little superstitions, the psyche has been given a tool that the conscious mind can correctly interpret so one’s subconscious can communicate with the conscious. Am I even close here?
I mean, I know it works. As I’m typing, my palm is beginning to itch. The spouse is about to leave the house and run errands, which will, no doubt, include a stop at the bank. He owes me for money he borrowed two weeks ago. Now I’m finished telling you the scenario, and my palm is finished itching.
The mind is a very powerful thing.
Nice points.
I think what I find myself wondering is how much of these little superstitions/beliefs are precognitive (signs and omens of things already on the way) and how much are creative (tools that can be used to create a reality not already in place)….
Because if the second is true. that means that by chosing our beliefs, we can chose the kind of world we live in….
And that rocks!….
