Hey there.

Back on April 3, I told you about one class (Getting That Metaphysical Book Out) that I’m developing with my friend Morgan Daimler for the fall Changing Times Changing Worlds convention

Now I’d like to talk to you about another class I’m working on for the same convention

Now, none of us is getting any younger and for many of us, that comes with more aches and pains. Pain management is a big deal, whether it’s from an acute injury or a chronic condition.

Now, I love mainstream medicine and feel that it has a lot to offer in the area of pain management, but it also has limitations and setbacks, such as side effects, addiction and your body acclimatizing to medication so it doesn’t work as well any more

For this reason, I’m pulling together a class on alternative health pain management techniques. What’s out there? What works? How does it work?

Since this is not a “one size fits all” universe (thank heavens), this class will offer introductory information about what might be helpful in the world of alternative medicine, so that people can make more informed choices and find the practices, mainstream medicine, alternative medicine or both that work best for their unique and special needs.

One of the most immediate issues you’ll have once you’re out of a bad relationship is stress.

Sounds crazy, no? After all, being in the bad relationship was the stressful part and now that you’re out, you should be able to relax, right?

Yes and no.

Being in a bad relationship is stressful, yes, but many times, your survival instincts will kick in while you’re in such a relationship. This is the reaction that lets people swim for miles through shark infested waters after a ship goes down or lift a car off of a loved one.

And survival instincts are not just for literal life or death situations. When you’re in a situation where you feel threatened, whether its physical harm,  or emotional, your adrenalin starts to pump, giving you the energy to fight or to run away, and if you’re in an ongoing stressful situation, you continue in a state of ongoing elevated adrenalin until te situation is resolved or until you finally run out of energy and collapse

and often, if you’ve been in this “fight or flight” level long enough, those elevated levels may continue, even after the threat is gone.

The “fight or flight” syndrome was originally supposed to be a short term solution to help you survive a challenging world- but when it becomes the long term default, it can deplete your immune system, harm your health, affect your ability to make decisions, limit your happiness and in general make it harder for you to have a good life.

And it feels lousy. Let’s not forget about that.

So we don’t want to stay in that state. But, when stress has become a habit, it may not change spontaneously. You may have to teach yourself how to relax and let go of stress.

There’s a lot of good ways to do this.

  • Exercise
  • Positive thinking
  • Meditation
  • Simplification
  • Relaxation exercises

And I’m going to get into some of these in more detail in coming posts.

The basic thing to remember right now is to pay attention to what your body is telling you, and when it starts to feel stressed, that’s time you need to slow down or stop and do something that helps you to feel calmer or happier

*Note- Being in or ending a bad or abusive relationship can leave you with physical, mental, emotional and spiritual damage which you need to deal with. Since this is not a “one size fits all universe”, everybody will have different things they need to heal and recover.

If you need medical treatment, or counselling, or medication, I’d encourage you to get what you need, just as I’d encourage you to try alternative health approaches or self esteem builders. Remember to find what works for you, and then make sure that you do what you need to heal on an ongoing basis.

Hey there.

For a lot of us, it’s the last dash until the holidays with too many good things to be done and not enough time to do them all.

It’s too easy to “shop til you drop”; but in the holiday season, it’s also important to remember to take care of ourselves as well

So, while you’re baking or wrapping or checking things off your life, here’s a little gift for you- a gift of five and a half peaceful minutes. Put down the spoon or the tape or the check list and take a moment to watch and breath and relax

and then do what you need to do to deck them halls and jingle them bells :)

It’s been getting colder hereabouts, and when it gets colder, my knees, which have seen a lot of living, start to ache more and even hurt. Given that my life is lived in motion most parts of the year and especially in the holiday season, painful knees and the associated limp are not what I want to be dealing with, especially when I’ve got people to see, places to go and things to do.

So, anyway, I was limping along on my daily rounds the other day and the pain and the crankiness in my knees got worse and worse until I finally had to stop, sit down and take a break.

And as I was sitting there, waiting for things to get more manageable so I could move on again, I started thinking.

I thought”Hey, I know that affirmations have helped in the past to ease pain for me. Haven’t done that for awhile.”

I thought “Hey, I know  acupressure to relive knee pain and make them stronger. Haven’t done that for awhile.”

I thought “I know Reiki too and that can do wonderful things to help my body heal. Haven’t done that for awhile.”

Well, duh.

I had the tools I needed to support my body and feel better. I knew what I needed to do to take care of myself, and I was so busy that I didn’t do it.

That ever happen to you?

So, I did my affirmations and I did my acupressure and I added in my Reiki, and, when I stood up again, 95% of the pain was gone and I was walking much better.

and there’s the two clues

It’s not enough to know how to do something- if you want to benefit from that knowledge, you have to use it,

and…

in this season of giving to and caring about others, its important to to take care of yourself as well.

So what do you know that you need to do to take care of yourself?

Well, we’re well into the holiday season now- a time for love and joy and peace on earth, a time for shopping and wrapping and loving your fellow man.

There’s a lot of stuff that goes into the joy of the holiday season, and even if you’re having the best holidays ever, there’s still the potential for some stress.

Fear not.

Fortunately, we’ve got something that can help you with stress so that you can get on with the joy part.

Let me make you an early holiday gift of one…

(It’s a gift that keeps giving…)

The next time you’re feeling anxious, angry, overwhelmed or down, instead of suffering, try this:

Take a deep breath, and

Look up at the ceiling.

(Repeat as needed…)

Give it a try now. Think of something that brings you down (income taxes, your least-favorite co-worker, cleaning out the fridge,…). Notice how it makes you feel,where it hits you in the body and in the spirit…

Then breath deep and look up. Feel the difference?

While it’s no substitute for Prozaac, most people find that when they do this, they feel more positive, centered and able to cope with whatever’s going on in their lives.

Why’s this work?

When we’re stressed, we breath in a short and shallow way. Breathing deeply and slowly triggers a mind-body connection saying “all is well”, and actually puts us in a better place, health and emotion-wise. Looking up seems to strengthen this reaction ( and when I’m facing challenges, I find looking up valuable for spiritual reasons as well…).

I like to think that we’re all hardwired with ways to change our beliefs, heal ourselves, find our centers and create our own best lives.

And, by the by, this technique is not just for the holidays, but works all year long. …

In any case, remember next time you’re feeling overwhelmed or down, breath deep and look up… and have a better day (or holiday).

PS  Just a thought- don’t do this in front of your bossy aunt  Margaret, your boss or any other person that is contributing to stress you’re feeling. They will surely take it the wrong way and this is the path to more stress…

went to the Natural Living Expo in Marlboro, Ma  this weekend and stumbled half by  accident into a wonderful talk by Burke Lennihan on alternative approaches to dealing with common health issues. She’s into homeopathy, so many of her suggestions were about that but she also had a lot to say about other approaches such as nutrition, vitamins, minerals and many other methods of supporting your own body’s ability to heal itself.

A great lecture. If you ever get a chance to see her talk, run, don’t walk,  to get your space for this talk.

But if you can’t or until you can…

As part of the lecture, Ms Lennihan gave away a copy of her book “Your Natural Medicine Cabinet: a Practical Guide to Drug-Free Remedies for Common Ailments” .

It’s wonderful. It’s a very complete yet readable book on alternative health approaches to challenge such as nausea, flu, sinus and anxiety , offering both quick fixes and ongoing care for these situations.  A great “feeling-of-what-do- I-do-now” home reference for each and every one of us.

So earlier this week I talked about the end of our silly season and how we were dropping back into a more relaxed and leisurely rate of living.

Except that we aren’t really. Because there’s a lot of stuff that we put on hold while we were so busy that we now have to catch up on, and the holidays are coming, and it’s NaNoWriMo time and there are so many interesting things to do…

So we’re slowing down, but we’re not really slowing down

and my body is beginning to talk to me about that

Little aches. Stuffed up nose. little sore throat

My body is telling me that I’ve done great things but now its time to throttle back and be only slightly less awesome

OK. I hear ya body. And I’ll try my best to drop to a different state of balance. To drop out of warp drive.

We all have a little miracle going on in our lives everyday- and we’re so used to it that we don’t even notice that it’s happening.

So stop and think for a minute about your body’s ability to heal itself.

No really. Have you thought about the fact that

  • when you get a cut, it heals?
  • when you bruise, it also resolves itself over time?
  • a broken bone will heal if kept safe from futher stress?
  • you’ll recover from a cold given rest and fluids?

Our bodies know how to heal themselves.

A lot of the time, illness is due to stretching our bodies beyond their limits, our bodies will heal themselves given time, and the best thing we can do to help is to give our bodies what they need to do the job, whether its rest, liquids, medication or Reiki.

It all starts with listening to our bodies, and then giving them what they need to support them the healing miracle they perform everyday.
